Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, October 23

BALTIMORE (October 18, 2018) – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 23 at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. The meeting will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m. Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following (times approximate):
9:35 a.m. Updating Regulations
The State Board will consider publishing a revised proposal that would update the education section of the Code of Maryland Regulations to add an “Extraordinary Career Leader Certificate” for prospective superintendents. In addition, the board will consider publishing a new definition for the Gifted and Talented student group. If approved, the proposals will be published in the Maryland Register and accept comments before the State Board takes a final vote.
9:50 a.m. Maryland Integrated Science Assessments
The State Board will hear a report on Maryland’s new science assessment for grades 5 and 8, including the cut scores that established performance levels on the test.
11:15 a.m. Every Student Succeeds Act
The State Board will continue its work on ESSA, and is scheduled to set summative score cut points for the assignment of stars to be used in the new Maryland Report Card rating system. Under that system, Maryland schools will receive a rating of between 1 and 5 stars.
2:30 p.m. High School Graduation Task Force
The State Board will hear a report on the final recommendations of the Maryland High School Graduation Task Force. The Task force began meeting in January at the request of the State Superintendent, focusing its attention on three areas: credit and program requirements, assessments, and options for awarding high school diplomas.
