Maryland State Summit on School Safety Reset for April 19
Reps from 24 School Systems to Learn the Latest Security Measures
BALTIMORE (April 6, 2018) – Leaders from Maryland’s 24 local school systems will meet in Annapolis on Thursday, April 19 for the 2018 Maryland Center for School Safety Summit.
The summit had been set for March 22, only to be postponed due to the school shooting at Great Mills High School and the inclement weather that affected the State.
Taking place in an atmosphere of heightened concern for schools, the summit will focus on state-of-the art preparation and prevention ideas and protocols during the morning sessions. School system administrators and guidance staff will discuss safety with their local law enforcement, fire departments, EMTs, and emergency management officials during the afternoon break-out sessions.
The Center is an independent unit of the State government, administered in cooperation with the Maryland State Police and the Maryland State Department of Education.
Among the highlights of the conference:
9 a.m. Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools, will address the conference.
10:30 a.m. Governor Hogan’s Executive Order, Active-Assailant Incident Preparedness and Coordination, and School Safety Initiatives
11:30 a.m. The Landscape of School Shootings with William Modzeleski, former Associate Assistant Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Safe and Drug Free Schools program, and a national expert in school security matters.
