Letter from Lavonne Taylor – Forest Hill Nature Preschool

We are excited to kick off this year’s fundraising campaign, Children Helping Children, to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network and Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital. As a center director myself, I have witnessed firsthand the amazing service the Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital offers to our community. Two years ago one of our students was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was taken to JHCH for surgery and care. Her life was saved and she received amazing care. She was able to return home and to normal activities within a few months of surgery. Your school can unite together this month to help raise money for this amazing resource that serves all of our communities in Maryland.

Children’s Miracle Network has done most of the work for you. There is already a website set up for Children Helping Children. As a center director, you can follow these easy steps to create a team for your school:

1. Go to www.helpmakemiracles.org/event/mscca
2. Register as an Individual, and under “Role” click on “Create a Team.”
3. Your Team Type will be “Team.” Enter your school’s name as the Team Name.
4. Add a fundraising goal for yourself as the administrator and for your school’s team.

Once you have created your team, you can use the tools on the website to send emails to your parents to invite them to join your team electronically, or you can copy and distribute the attached flier with directions for your parents to register as part of your team.

You can organize your fundraiser entirely online using the website provided, or you can add to your fundraising efforts by creating a chart to track donations that you hang up in a central location in your center. You can even organize a special event in coordination with your fundraiser. At my school, we are planning a Preschool Prom. We decorate the school according to a theme (this year’s theme is Candyland!), and set up each classroom as a different station with areas for dancing and music, snacks and food, crafts, and indoor games. Parents bring their children and a dish for the pot luck, and they stay to enjoy a fun family event. We have a staff member on hand with a computer to help parents register and make donations to Children’s Miracle Network at the event and we track donations with a chart hanging in the hallway until the end of the month.

I know you are going to want to participate because it is the right thing to do and because we all appreciate the work that Hopkins does for the children in Maryland, but there are additional benefits. Each school who registers a team and raises money for this campaign will receive a printed certificate of appreciation, which you can hang on your wall and use as a talking point when giving tours to prospective parents. We have also submitted an approval form to the Credentialing branch for center staff to earn PAUs for organizing this event at their schools.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need help setting up or organizing your campaign. Thank you in advance on behalf of the hundreds of children in Maryland who are served each year at Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital for participating in this fundraising effort. Together we can make a difference for the children in our community!
